The purpose of the HSIE syllabus is to provide students an opportunity to learn about people and their environments to develop a knowledge base consisting of “Australian and world history and geography, for social, cultural and legal studies, for environmental and economic studies, and for citizenship education” (NSW Board of Studies, 2006). Content within HSIE becomes a continuum to the 7-10 syllabus in History and Geography. This key learning area provides students opportunities to explore challenging issues and engage with current and future world events. It aims to develop inquiry learning skills and providing experiences with actual people, places and issues wherever possible. HSIE aims to provide students with information so that they may make educated decisions and opinions about social, economic, religious, civic and environments issues that may affect them, by specifically providing students a range of perspectives.
As mentioned earlier, and a nature of the KLA that is very important to myself as a teacher, HSIE aims to assist students in developing a sense of personal, community, national and global identity in which they may apply their knowledge, skills and attitudes to participate as responsible citizens to improve the quality of society and the environment. This purpose of the KLA can be developed by the whole school community through active participation in charity fundraising and environmental issue awareness campaigns. This relates content to students’ real life to deepen knowledge, skills, values and attitudes, which I think is an extremely important aspect of engaging and effective teaching.
